From the sidelines, student-athlete learns to adapt in difficult situations

Posted on Friday, March 14, 2025

Student keeps active on campus

Junior Trenton Harrison has faced his share of pressure through his years of playing football, but remaining calm has helped him navigate through tough circumstances, including a debilitating knee injury last fall that kept him out of the game he loves.

“I see challenges as opportunities for growth,” he said. “I focus on problem-solving, staying positive, and adapting to the situation. Life will always have obstacles, but how you respond to them defines you.”

He said dealing with injuries has taught him patience and resilience, qualities he learned from his experiences on the gridiron.

“Football has been a big part of my life,” he said. “While setbacks have made things challenging, my love for the sport and the lessons it teaches me remain strong.”

During his time at LaGrange, he has developed a strong bond not only with his teammates, but also with the larger campus community.

“I chose LaGrange College because of its close-knit community and the opportunities to be more than just a number in a crowd,” he said. “I wanted a place where I could build real connections, leave a legacy, and grow both academically and personally.”

A Marketing and Entrepreneurship major and Psychological Science minor, Harrison said he considers his professors as mentors and supporters who care.

“They challenge me to think critically, push my limits and prepare me for the real world,” he said.Student leads orientation session

Assistant Psychology Professor Dr. Marci DeRamus said he is always an active participant in the classroom.

“He has a positive attitude that encourages other students to contribute to discussions,” she said.

Harrison’s exuberant enthusiasm carries over into his campus roles as orientation leader and resident assistant. He is also involved in Black Student Union.

“I’ve learned the importance of community, leadership, resilience and taking initiative,” he said. “College is what you make of it, and being actively involved has allowed me to grow in ways I never expected. The feeling of becoming a recognized leader on campus and having a lasting impression is something I’ll always cherish.”

After graduation, he hopes to build a career in marketing.

“Whether it’s starting my own business or working for a company that aligns with my values, I want to make an impact and create something meaningful,” he said.

For Harrison, LC provided him with an enriching environment to thrive.

“LaGrange College offers a tight-knit community, leadership opportunities and a place to truly grow,” he said. “Here, you’re not just another student, you’re part of something bigger.”
